Themes:
My intent as an artist is to explore and record the feminine archetypal journey and the best way for me to do this is to put on canvas the drives and reflections of my own life.
My imagery is inspired by Jungian analysis and my love of symbols, metaphor and the unconscious. The ideas for paintings often arrive in my mind’s eye while I am doing chores, cooking, reading or driving. Often the images are clear but not fully complete and in the creative process of painting they take on a life of their own and direct me. The paintings appear to be of ordinary people most often in isolation, but on closer inspection there is usually something odd and unfamiliar present encouraging the viewer to look again.
I can only ponder the true meanings behind the images and at the time of painting I may have ideas and explanations about the work, but their true meanings are revealed many years later supporting the theory that Art is the language of the soul. My work invites the viewer to participate in the search for meaning, engaging both the spirit and mind.
Creativity: As a practising artist and teacher I believe the desire to put a certain mark down on a surface is the main inspiration you need. To create a painting we need to make decisions based on ways of seeing and techniques learned, but most of all to follow our own unfolding process of moving paint around and letting a painting emerge. On this journey we learn most about our craft and ourselves.
As a teacher I encourage the Studio’s artists to pursue their own journey and imagery with whatever techniques and materials that best support their expression.
Over the years many artists have influenced my work but some are constantly inspirational such as Caravaggio, Lucien Freud, Andrew Wyeth, Julio Larraz and Julie Speed.
